Understanding the relationship between tramadol and anxiety is crucial for several reasons. First, many individuals prescribed tramadol for pain management may also struggle with anxiety, either as a pre-existing condition or as a potential side effect of the medication. Second, some healthcare providers may consider tramadol as an off-label treatment for certain anxiety disorders, making it essential to weigh the potential benefits against the risks. Overall, 651,556 (51,994 new users, 19,945 continuing users, and 579,617 nonusers) met the inclusion and exclusion criteria described. After propensity matching, the equalized study populations consisted of 25,889 within each opioid use category (72% new users and 28% continuing users) (Table 1). New and continuing tramadol or other opioid users were relatively equalized on matching variables including age, sex, region, location, income, minority, access to care, plan type, and health status.
Salem et al.,[8] previously examined the safety and efficacy of the same active ingredient present in tramadol (tramadol HCl) for the treatment of PE. Their AE rate in patients taking the study drug (13%) was similar to our study (12.4%). The thermal thresholds exceeded the 95% confidence interval at 0.75, 3, and 6 hours after 1 mg/kg tramadol, but not at 1, 2, 4, 8, and 24 hours.12 A dose titration study evaluated the effects of tramadol dosed 0.5 to 4 mg/kg by mouth in cats using a thermal threshold model. Inform female patients of reproductive potential that tramadol hydrochloride and acetaminophen can cause fetal harm and to inform the healthcare provider of a known or suspected pregnancy [see Use in Specific Populations (8.1)].
